Community Event 2006The Community Event 2006 was held on Tuesday 23 May at Rudgwick Village Hall. The Event is based around one of the ten themes of the Community Strategy for Horsham district each year.
The event this year was based around the theme, Facilities and Services for Young People. There were nine expert sessions, cutting across many of the Community Strategy themes. These included setting up a Youth Club, informal play provision, funding, recruiting volunteers, involving young people, community transport, housing, community safety and drugs/alcohol awareness.
Horsham District Council displayed a large map charting the provision of facilities and services for young people throughout the Horsham district. Visitors could tour the United Bus and see the Snack Wagon which were parked to the front of the Village Hall.
The event was aimed at Parish Councils, Community Partnerships and Parish Plan Groups who are actively consulting the young people in their communities to find out what facilities and services they would like or need through the Parish Plan process.
The purpose of the Event was to help these Parish Councils, Community Partnerships and Parish Plan Groups implement actions from their Parish Plans:
- To provide a ‘one stop shop’ for those working to provide facilities and services for young people
- To meet with experts for advice and direction
- To raise awareness and promote existing facilities and to share examples of good practice
- To meet with others working to achieve similar aims to investigate collaborative working
- To share views with the Horsham District Community Partnership on blockages to the provision of facilities and services for young people
The event was organised for the Horsham District Community Partnership by Shelley Denman, Clare Ebelewicz and Beverley Turner of Horsham District Council.
Beverley Turner, Parish Liaison Officer at Horsham District Council, reported to the Horsham District Community Partnership Board on 06 June 2006 that 31 people had attended the event; 15 out of 32 parishes were represented. Two Neighbourhood Wardens and one PCSO also attended.
Of the attendees who returned a comments form, they all said that the event had been worthwhile, and some asked for a young people’s event to be held every year. Attendees also commented that the experts were willing to listen, and that attendees had made useful contacts, and learnt from others through communication of experience.
The experts are following up requests for help that were raised during the experts’ session at the event.
The Horsham District Community Partnership Board were very pleased with the outcome of the event which had been tailored specifically for those addressing the needs and concerns of young people. Planning is already under way for the Community Event for 2007, which will be based around the theme, Facilities and Services for Older Persons.Map of facilities and services for young people
